Medhu vadai

‘The pipe is sweet, the lute is sweet’ say those who have not heard the prattle of their own children - Thirukural
Medhu vadai
Medhu vadai is a snack prepared with ural dhal. It will be crisp outside and completely soft inside, to get this texture we need to grind urad dhal very fluffy. And to test for the right consistency, drop little bit of urad dhal batter in the water if it floats then it’s the right consistency. Now check on the ingredients,

Ingredients

  • Urad dhal – 1 cup
  • Onion chopped – ½ cup
  • Green chilies chopped – 1tsp
  • Ginger grated – 1tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Rice flour – 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for deep frying

Method:

  1. First grind the urad dhal in a grinder. Do not use more water for grinding, just sprinkle 4-5 tsp of water. Batter should be fluffy and thick
  2. Then add chopped onion, green chilies, ginger, curry leaves, rice flour and salt to taste.
  3. Mix all the ingredient, then wet a plastic cover or banana leaf.
  4. Wash your hand with water and take some batter, spread it on the plastic cover. Put a hole in the center of the vadai using your index finger.
  5. Deep fry it in hot oil. Serve hot with coconut chutney.

Note: Same batter can be used for preparing bonda. All the ingredients are same, only onion should be avoided for bonda.
